Are elections the best way to choose Muslim leaders?

For far too long, the Islamic world has been dominated by one political method to the exclusion of all others – monarchy. Ever since the Caliphate was passed on from Muawiya (R) to his woefully under-qualified son, Muslims have turned almost every institution into a hereditary monarchy. In fact, it is one of the ironies of history that a faith that places so much emphasis on the equality of all human beings apart from their level of Taqwa (fear of Allah) has become most closely associated with Sultans, Pashas, Khedives, Emperors, Badshahs and Emirs.

Sometimes we need to be reminded

Sometimes we need to be reminded

“O assembly of jinns and men! If you have power to pass beyond the zones of the heavens and the earth, then pass (them)! But you will never be able to pass them, except with authority (from Allah)!” [Quran. Surah Rahman Ayah 33] I remember reading this ayah in the Quran, Surah Rahman, for the first time. The Miracle of Mothers

The Miracle of Mothers

Posted on June 1, 2011 in: Life

I’ve finally got a chance to collect my thoughts so I want to get them written down, I’ll make a start now and keep adding to it and send it out later. In some ways this is probably going to be one of the most difficult things I will write in my life, but in others, it’s all coming so easily.

Reflections on a Royal Wedding

No matter how hard I tried, it was hard to avoid the hysteria regarding the marriage of Prince William to Kate Middleton. They seemed to find something to mention about it in the news in almost every bulletin, their faces are plastered on everything from biscuit tins to tea towels and we keep being endlessly reminded that at least 2 Billion people tuned in to watch the event on TV. In my three years at university, nothing has beat the experience of going around London during Charity Week, especially during tube and street collections,  and being able to speak to a complete stranger (I come from the North, so I truly appreciate those instances when London’s social norms are broken), just because they are wearing the same t-shirt and shaking a bucket for the same cause as you. The Charity Week Annual Dinner brings all those who meet for a moment on a busy day, together.

Weekly Reminder Webinars – Miss it, Miss out!

Posted on May 6, 2011 in: Multimedia

Aaaah Sunday evenings. How I hate thee. The end of my weekend and I realise that I’ve done nothing of any use or enjoyment. All I have to look forward to is another dreary week of slogging away at work/ university. There’s nothing good on TV (there never is unless you count “Come dine with me.”) There are no shops open. Everyone else is caught in the same situation as you – stuck somewhere between boredom and depression.
